Excursion to the Krkonoše National Park

The Krkonoše Mts. are situated in north-eastern Bohemia on the border between Czech and Poland. The National Park was formally established in 1959. Nowadays it covers an area of about 425 km² and it is recognized as one of the most valuable landscapes and natural habitats of Central Europe (recent classification in the world network of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserves).

Alternative I

Starting / Ending point: tourist hut Vyrovka (GPS coordinates: 50°42'55.377"N, 15°40'50.12"E)

Date & Time: 19 of September 2012 from 9.00 to 16.00

Recommended clothing: warm clothing, rain coat, walking boots, trekking poles, sun protection cream

This excursion in meant for participants who are no worried of walking on steep and stony slopes. From the tourist hut Vyrovka we will take you through the Valley Obří důl (Giant Mine). It could be of your interest that in the past in this valley there were metal mines (iron, copper and arsenic ore). In the beginning of the 20th century the mining ended. In this mountain glacial valley we will observe the moraines, typical avalanche-like slopes and rare high-mountain plants, mosses and lichens typical of the Tundra ecosystem. Walking up through the valley we will see Sněžka, the top of the Krkonoše Mts. (1.602 m a.s.l). Once arrived to the mountain pass Obří sedlo (Giant saddle), the highest point on our route (about 1.500 m a.s.l), we will go on walking till the tourist hut Luční bouda (the Meadow Chalet) where we will have the opportunity to taste their own brew beer. From Luční bouda we will go back through the wetlands with typical peat-bogs to the starting point (Vyrovka). More information will be given on the spot by the expert staff of the Krkonoše Mountains National Park responsible of guiding us through this wonderful tour.

Alternative II

Starting / Ending point: tourist hut Vyrovka (GPS coordinates: 50°42'55.377"N, 15°40'50.12"E)

Date & Time: 19 of September 2012 from 10.00 to 16.00

Recommended clothing: warm clothing, rain coat, walking boots, sun protection cream

This excursion is meant for participants who are looking for a relaxing day in the nature with no worries of walking up on steep and stony slopes. From the tourist hut Vyrovka the trail goes till the Polish side of the Krkonoše Mountains National Park. The landscape has an extreme northern appearance. The best example of this landscape can be seen in Luční hora (Meadows mountain). The shape of the terrain was mainly modelled by water and frost. Once arrived to the mountain pass Obří sedlo (Giant saddle) will go on walking through the wetlands with typical peat-bogs till the tourist hut Luční bouda (the Meadow Chalet) where we will have the opportunity to taste their own brew beer. From Luční bouda we will go back to the starting point (Vyrovka). More information will be given on the spot by the expert staff of the Krkonoše Mountains National Park responsible of guiding us through this wonderful tour.
